It’s high time I take on the Jesus word only movement. Out of all the cults and sects out there, this one really gets my goat. Maybe it’s because the people passing judgment on Paul should get up and go travel the world, get beaten, shipwrecked, imprisoned, and spend life preaching before they tell me Paul was a false apostle.
The Jesus word only heresy really has nothing to do with following Jesus. Nothing at all actually. And this movement is not new, it’s been around since Paul’s day.
2 Corinthians 13:3 Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you.
The Corinthian church sought a proof of Christ speaking in Paul.
However today, many people in the Jesus word only movement call him a false prophet, and a gnostic.
The charges that Paul was a gnostic have absolutely no basis in fact. Gnostics deny the bodily incarnation. Paul affirmed this in all of his letters.
2 Corinthians 13:4 For though he was crucified
Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law
1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross
1 Corinthians 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ
Paul affirmed the truth of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. As well as His incarnation. A gnostic would never do this.
The second charge against Paul is that he is not qualified to be an apostle because he never was a disciple of Christ on earth.
If that is the case, then Matthias was false as well.
This type of thinking is simplistic, Jesus Christ revealed Himself to Saul on the road to Damascus. Anyone who denies this needs to brand Luke a false witness. (Acts 9)
In addition to losing Luke and Matthias, the Jesus word only group also loses Peter, someone who spent their life with Christ during His earthly ministry.
Peter backed Paul and said what he wrote was scripture. (2 Peter 3:16-17)
Not only has the Jesus word only movement lost Luke, Matthias, but now Peter.
Ultimately, the Jesus word only movement is not about Jesus at all. The movement is an approach to trying to remove Paul from Christianity, Paul preached clearly against homosexuality (Romans 1) and told women to be silent in the church (1 Corinthians 14:34)
Paul also preached salvation by faith alone (Romans 4)
I will show now, that a person cannot truly be Jesus word only and must live their life as though we are in the church age dispensation that Paul wrote about under the guidance of the Holy Ghost.
Anyone claiming to be Jesus word only, please answer these questions.
Do you still offer animals at the altar according to Matthew 5:23-24?
Do you preach salvation by faith plus works? (Mark 16:16)
Can you cast out devils?
Speak with new tongues?
Take up serpents?
Lay hands on the sick?
or drink poison? (Mark 16:17-18)
Can you say to a mountain “be thou removed”? And have it obey you? (Matthew 17:20)
Do you receive everything you ask for in prayer? (Matthew 21:22)
See, all these things were true, and did happen for people. But now we’re in a new dispensation brought about by the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and preach the Gospel as revealed to Paul. All Scripture is inspired, but not everything applies doctrinally for this dispensation.
